This is a 4 week project based lesson plan. Students in your classroom will learn physics and trigonometry concepts necessary to plan, design, and implement a bridge design. The students will take on the role of young engineers, will be engaged in a classroom competition in groups for imaginary grant money, will be able to test their bridges to see whose can hold the most mass. However, before they can conduct a final test, the students will learn how force diagrams are drawn and interpreted, how forces are distributed in static objects, what the trigonometric ratios mean, what is important to measure and note during model testing, and what the engineering process of designing and testing models entails by investigating the concepts with their groups. In the investigation lessons, students will be able to use tools for measuring force and mass, scientific or graphing calculators for computing trig functions, and computers for testing designs. Finally, at the end of the 4 weeks, the students will build a final model with their team and will present their model to the class.
